Barbara Grondine, President
Barbara Grondine has been a board member with TPC for 40 years, and has been the board president for the last six years. Her commitment to advancing the cause for homelessness and addiction recovery is how she makes her life. Barbara’s advocacy for the clients of The Psychological Center is demonstrated by the amount of time she has devoted to this cause.
In addition to her work surrounding homelessness and recovery, Barbara is also committed to advancing the cause for public education, having served on the Methuen School Committee for 24 years and being a two-term member of the Greater Lawrence Technical School Committee. She retired as a counselor and school psychologist after working for the North Andover School Department for 27 years.
Barbara currently lives in Methuen with her husband Tom and their four children. Her favorite quote is from the poet Carl Sandburg; “Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have and only you can determine how it will be spent.”
Penny Hamel, Member
Penny Hamel is a graduate of Merrimack College where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She began her career working in the utility field with Massachusetts Electric and then with Colonial Gas. Her early positions there included being Mass Electric’s first female Lineman and the first female outside sales representative for Colonial Gas.
She is currently the vice president of loan officer development at Salem Five Mortgage Co. Penny is also a past president of the Northeast Builders Association and has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Home Builders Association of Massachusetts. She was the Northeast Realtor Association Business Partner of the Year in 2007 and 2015. She is also a member and past president of the Westford Rotary Club and serves on their board of directors.
Penny is the past chair of the Revenue Committee for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell. She was the sponsor behind bringing Up With People to the Merrimack Valley in 2012 and 2014. She also volunteers for animal rescue groups and on a regular basis fosters Australian Shepherds until they can find their “forever” homes. She has volunteered for several other charities and local organizations. Penny and her husband, Jeff, have two grown children. She resides in Methuen.

Karen joined Foster Sullivan Insurance Group, a division of Acrisure (Acrisure.com) in 2008 as a licensed insurance agent. She proudly services all states in the US in her natural ability to create strong, trustworthy working relationships with her clients by providing insurance solutions to their business.
Prior to joining Foster Sullivan, Karen served as a Human Resource Director in the Broker Operations at Putnam Investments. She also owned and operated a Steel Erecting Construction Company. Karen’s work experience brings an immense amount of understanding and knowledge to the insurance process from an owner’s perspective.
Karen is currently an active member of the Northeast Human Resource Association board, held Presidency at Mill City BNI and currently sits on the Hanover Advisory Committee. Karen is an active Board of Director member for many of the non-profit organizations that she manages and insures. Giving back is very important to her at this point of her career.
In her spare time, Karen enjoys running races for charity events that provide funding to our Veterans. She volunteers at the Travis Mills Foundation working with recalibrated Veterans. Her work includes “brain trauma/loss of limb” alternative activities around events such as rock climbing, running, kayaking, rope climbing and swimming. Karen’s passion is raising awareness and supporting our US troops. She also enjoys spending time with her King Charles Cavalier pup on the beaches of Maine
Karen graduated from the University of Hartford with a degree in Business Management. She also holds her master’s degree in Human Resources.
